The CTV Ottawa Management team recently scheduled a Laughter Yoga session as a different and offbeat teambuilding exercise. Everyone who participated thoroughly enjoyed the benefits of laughing together and checking our corporate hats at the door. As a teambuilding exercise… Mission accomplished.

Une expérience en fait étrange, mais finalement très agréable. Simuler le rire m’a paru difficile à première vue, lors des premiers exercices, parfois, la difficulté disparaissait grâce au groupe qui jouait bien le jeu. Ceci dit, la session dans l’ensemble, aussi exigeante m’ait-elle semblé par moment, a été très positive pour le groupe. Après l’atelier de Sophie, le groupe s’est comporté assez différemment, des complicités nouvelles se sont créées, une confiance mutuelle et comme « collective » s’est formée .Pour tout travail de groupe, en entreprise, en milieu professionnel quelconque, je crois qu’un atelier de yoga du rire, aiderait énormément tout groupe à former des nouveaux liens, une communication renouvelée, une complicité… aidant le fonctionnement du groupe dans son ensemble. At first I wasn’t sure what to expect from Laughter Yoga and thought it would be a forced and awkward activity. However, Sophie soon had us laughing and giggling and enjoying the quick changes from one game to another.The whole group was genuinely having fun and enjoying feeling like children again. This a wonderful team building activity and Sophie is the perfect personality to bring out the laughter in any group.

Mood Disorders Ottawa Mutual Support Group (MDO)

Every third Tuesday of the month, Mood Disorders Ottawa invites a guest speaker to make a presentation to members and the general public. The topics are usually mental health-related with the purpose of educating and sometimes enlightening and enriching the lives of those in attendance. On the evening of September 16th 2008, MDO was lucky to receive all of the above and more from Sophie Terrasse with her interactive presentation on Laughter Yoga.
Below is a personal account from a member who attended Sophie's presentation:
This was not solely an intellectual exercise, we had to get on our feet and "laugh for no reason!" This was a particularly tough crowd because the majority of us struggle with a mood disorder. For some of us, just getting out of the house was a major accomplishment! But the ice was broken five minutes into Sophie's introduction when she opened her bag of funny hats, masks and costume pieces. Once we were wearing these items, most of us had a license to be goofy and goofy we were. And the effect? Magnificent!
Almost everyone in the room participated in a series of laughter exercises that reduced many of us to giggling fools, and it was bliss! We were like children again. One participant said "Most people don't expect to go to a depression support group and have a good time!" Another had only come to the presentation to check it out, but he left "light-hearted and glowing." Many commented that it felt like we'd had an aerobic workout--just from laughing. Our endorphins were flowing and negative thoughts chased away.
So, I concur with Reader's Digest, "laughter is the best medicine," and the only side effects are positive. Thanks, Sophie and please, come again.

Un groupe d'environ 30 employés et employées se sont réunis un vendredi midi, pour apprendre ce qu'était le yoga du rire. Sophie ne nous a pas laissés longtemps sur nos chaises. Elle a réussi à établir, rapidement, un bon rapport avec son auditoire, qui a visiblement apprécié sa chaleur humaine, sa présentation, et les exercices de rire. Certains ont commencé les exercices avec une certaine appréhension (dans quoi on s'embarque!) mais ils ont bien surmonté leurs inhibitions, pour finalement participer pleinement. Ce fut une belle heure de ressourcement, au milieu d'une journée de travail chargée.

TRAINING WORKSHOP@TriCounty Addiction Services - SMYTH FALLS

Thank you for your comprehensive presentation to our staff at the TriCounty Addiction Services, on 1 May 2009, about the work of Dr. Madan Kataria, laughter clubs, and essentials of Laughter Yoga in therapeutic work.

As you know, we have been trying to keep abreast of developments in treatments that combine mind-body elements, particularly as those seem to be especially meaningful for our addictions and mental health clients in their efforts to achieve both physical and psychological experiences that can help undo and replace their misuse use of alcohol or other drugs or their involvement in problem gambling. We have been enthused about such interventions as auricular acupuncture and stress management treatments that involve deep breathing and other forms of relaxation. Intuitively, “laughter is the best medicine” has seemed a theme worth exploring, and your workshop helped us appreciate the potential value of laughter yoga to combine a number of elements in our practice.

It was convenient for us that you were able to meet with on site in our offices and that your costs were reasonable and your coverage of the material very thorough. Particularly noteworthy about your presentation was that you “practiced what you preached” – immediately demonstrating the benefits (and joy and fun) of the techniques, while explaining the theory and procedures for their application in generous detail: we learned practical skills for use in our practice, experienced personal benefits, and had a good time.

That you were able to speak about World Laughter Day on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on the weekend after being with us was a happy coincidence: I hope that your comments there and on the CBC help spread the word of the power of laughter to help promote peace and global consciousness of friendship though laughter -- and will bring the value of your own work to larger audiences.

Coach Sophie Terrasse engaged Barrhaven Toastmasters in a twenty minute Laughter Yoga Icebreaker. Club members experienced first hand the benefits this workout offers to those willing to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. Various exercises provided opportunities for teambuilding. Speaking anxiety might be lowered in some as laughing at ourselves is the best medicine against taking ourselves too seriously. The laughter session was the highlight of our evening and fit well into the program Toastmasters offers to its members. Un gros Merci, Sophie!

Workshop @ Citizenship and Immigration Canada - June 2009
Tired and laughing about it!

Thanks to Sophie Terrasse for the wonderful Laughter Yoga experience! Our Social Club is grateful for the impact it had on participants.

Right before attending her one-hour activity, I was a little skeptic and tired. The previous week had been without sun and many were affected by that. But with her energy and efficient communication skills, Sophie slowly took control of the room as she was explaining what Laughter Yoga is about: exercising your ability to let go.

We did a few streching exercises and group-building chants (nothing religious). Progressively, all were invited to abandon themselves, to let go of stress and worries as we followed Sophie and her funny and quick methods, allowing us to get in touch with our child-like spirit.

Step by step, we built on our physical ability to mimic laughing and eventually it paid out: laughs were becoming real! This type of activity is not only a great stress-reliever but a new way to get in touch with a different part of ourselves, as our colleagues and friends do the same.

Even though we were all acting a bit silly (to wake up the laughs) no one was judged or judgmental… We were all in similar positions; either tired, stressed-out, or simply curious. But one thing was for sure: we were all humans connecting to our inner positive side and with others.

The session ended with a simple and relaxing yoga meditation that brought us back after all the laughing.

Was I skeptic after it was over ? No.

It's true: laughing is good for the body and afterwards you just feel like you're on a cloud.It would be wonderful if more people could experience a session like this. We are considering inviting Sophie over for a much larger audience.

La séance a bien atteint ses objectifs de détendre l'atmosphère trop sérieuse de la réunion et d'exposer les employés à cette technique pour le moins original.

Grâce à votre enthousiasme, vous avez réussi à faire participer presque la totalité des employés ce qui n'est pas banal parce que cela leur demandait de sortir de leur "zone de comfort" habituel.

Bonjour Sophie,
Un petit mot pour te remercier d'avoir si bien lancé notre journée.
Plusieurs personnes m'ont dit comment ils se sentaient bien après les exercices du rire.
J'ai été surpris de voir plus de 175 personnes participer aux exercices.
Même si toutes les chaises et les tables empêchaient les déplacements,
les gens ont quand même bien participé à ce que tu leur demandais,
debout derrière leurs chaises entre les tables.
À la fin de la journée, les amis me disaient comment ils avaient joui de la conférence.

OTTAWA SUNFLOWER LAUGHTER CLUB - Feb 2010

Before the session started I told my friend that I had no expectation of good or bad and just to keep an opened mind and enjoy the new experience that I was about to take. I was a bit resistant at the beginning, but then I told myself that nobody here knows for the exception of my friend and slowly I began to let go and feel free again. Sophie your program is awesome because you didn't give me time to think what was going on because you synchronized one play after another. But what really got me is the amount of energy that was drawn out of me, and I'm very sensitive about that factor due to my intensive triathlon training schedule. It felt that I was in one hour training on my bike after 20 minutes of laughing yoga. I've included more laughing in my daily routine and I'm not dramatizing things as much. Sophie many more thanks to this experience and I think you are gifted at what you do, we need more of you out there.

De retour à Toronto pour une semaine, après une fin de semaine de formation avec vous pour devenir animatrice de Yoga du rire, je suis encore euphorique. Sophie, je me sens aussi revivifiée que si je venais de passer une semaine dans une station balnéaire. Non seulement nous nous sommes amusés pendant 3 jours, mais vous avez aussi créé l’environnement parfait pour apprendre dans un atelier équilibré où il y avait de la théorie, de la pratique… et du rire, bien entendu. L’atmosphère au Centre CARMEN était idéale.

Je suis éblouie par votre capacité de découvrir les forces de chacun d’entre nous et de nous amener à les développer. J’ai aussi remarqué qu’aucune de nos erreurs ne vous a échappé – hoho hahaha. Votre manière de nous faire part de vos observations avec compassion, attention et soutien nous a amenés à nous dépasser et nous a apporté un esprit de calme et de confiance en soi.

J’ai introduit une période de 15 minutes de Yoga du rire dans l’atelier que je donnais aujourd’hui sur la créativité. Même si je manque sérieusement d’expérience, j’avais effectivement confiance en mes connaissances et ma compréhension du Yoga du rire et j’ai énormément apprécié l’énergie que vous m’avez inspirée de créer. Je vous suis tellement reconnaissante pour votre don de soi et pour votre professionnalisme impeccable dans tous les aspects de votre formation. Vous êtes un vrai modèle pour moi.

Eh bien Sophie, je vous souhaite tout ce qu’il y a de meilleur dans votre aventure de rire et j’espère sincèrement que j’aurai le plaisir de vous revoir très bientôt. Merci du fond du cœur.

In theatre, it's so important that actors build energy and overcome nervousness before any performance. Laughter Yoga was a true success in this regard, but it also provided an excellent opportunity to overcome inhibitions and build a real sense of team spirit! Sophie is an excellent leader whose positivity is infectious, leaving our theatre group with broad smiles that we will pass on to the audience. I believe Laughter Yoga is a fantastic exercise for anyone who might find themselves getting ready to go on to any of life's many stages.

CÉLÉBRATION DE LA JOURNÉE MONDIALE DU RIRE
Colline du Parlement - Ottawa

Par un beau dimanche ensoleillé, nous nous sommes présentées sur la Colline du Parlement pour une activité bien hors du commun..... Un atelier intitulé: "Yoga du rire" animée par Sophie Terrasse qui a promis de faire d'Ottawa la Capitale du Rire....

Une série d'exercises entrainants et joyeux où le rire est le motif et l'expression de tous les types d'échanges entre les participant-es. Pas besoin de spectacle d'humour!.... On rit pour le bienfait que le rire procure, c'est facile et contagieux. Aussi bénéfique qu'un "workout" laborieux, mais oh! combien plus agréable!

Aucune personne présente n'est sceptique, tout le monde rit même les touristes de passage dans la Capitale et qui ne parlent pas la langue, participent d'emblée sans questionner!. C'est bon, communicatif, ça fait du bien à l'âme et au corps.

RIRE.... C'EST DRÔLE.....
Eh oui! avec tout mon scepticisme j'ai décidé de me lancer dans la grande aventure de Rire.... ah.. ah.. ah....et ce, sur la Colline du Parlement à Ottawa....avec Sophie!.
Étant une personne assez rigide, plutôt sérieuse et parfois taciturne .... je me sentais vraiment insécure et en fait j'avais peur du ridicule..... de prendre le risque de briser ces états d'âme en allant rire.....
A ma grande surprise je me suis sentie transportée dans une énergie indescriptible, les barrières ont disparues quand soudainement j'ai réalisé que je me sentais légère, ailleurs dans ma tête, décrochée du quotidien, disconnectée de mon mental.... mon égo.... j'avais du fun.... Ce furent des beaux moments de bonheur... et en plus gratuit!.... Les séries d'exercices du Yoga du rire, de respirations, de danses animées et organisées par Sophie attention c'est contagieux!...

Ce fut tout-à-fait surprenant! Je ne m'attendais pas du tout à ça... C'est une des meilleures techniques de gestion du stress que j'ai effectuées à ce jour. En plus d'avoir un effet bénéfique au niveau physique, l'impact psychologique se fait sentir. Le fait de rire de cette façon, sans retenue, nous amène à lâcher-prise, l'espace de quelques instants. Ca change définitivement les perspectives sur le monde, sur soi et sur les autres! Quelle belle façon de former une dynamique de groupe... Merci Sophie de nous avoir partagé ta passion avec autant de générosité...Je suis convaincue que les étudiants du cours "Gestion du stress, coping et adaptation" en resteront marqués.

Je saisis l’occasion de votre présence dans mon cours d’intervention alternative en service social pour vous faire part de quelques commentaires qui émanent de votre présentation.

J’ai trouvé l’expérience extraordinaire, de plusieurs points de vue. Pour moi, en tant que professeur, un cours comme celui-ci est inoubliable. Je crois dans les approches alternatives mais celle-ci, grâce au rire, dépasse toutes attentes et est remplie de potentiel thérapeutique.

Au niveau pédagogique, vous êtes une communicatrice très douée, remplie de talents. Vous savez faire passer un message, simplement, concrètement. En plus, vous évoquez des recherches qui viennent appuyer vos principes et théories. Vos exercices sont à la fois simples et efficaces.

Au niveau personnel, j’ai beaucoup appris également. Votre message passe très bien : savoir rire, tout simplement. Après quelques minutes, j’ai pu oublier le mur qui séparent habituellement professeurs/étudiant-e-s, et rire, avec eux.

Merci pour cette grande contribution à mon cours et à la formation de ces étudiant-e-s en sciences sociales.

Je veux juste vous remercier d'être venue partager le yoga du rire avec les enfants de notre garderie. La première fois que nous nous sommes parlé, vous m'avez dit que les enfants d'âge préscolaire étaient vraiment très jeunes et que vous n'étiez pas sûre que Ie yoga du rire soit de leur âge. Je suis vraiment contente de vous avoir convaincue de tenter l'expérience !

Vous vous souviendrez sûrement que votre première visite a été un franc succès. Nous sommes très contents que vous soyez revenue par la suite et avons toujours hâte à la prochaine séance. En regardant les enfants pratiquer le yoga du rire à la garderie (les plus jeunes ont deux ans et demi), j'en ai remarqué un en particulier qui se dressait de tout son long puis se baissait pour taper sur le sol en riant. Quand je lui ai demandé ce qu'il faisait, il m'a répondu, en riant : "Sophie". Les enfants se souviennent aussi de la version de "Bonne fête" que vous nous avez apprise. Quand nous fêtons l'anniversaire d'un enfant, ils nous demandent de chanter le "Bonne fête de Sophie" plutôt que la version traditionnelle.

Merci encore d'avoir fait du rire un élément important de notre programme.
